Why carbon removal matters
To prevent the most catastrophic effects of climate change, scientists agree we must limit the global average temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. That means reducing global annual CO₂ emissions from around 40 gigatonnes per year to net zero by 2050.
Reducing new emissions alone will not be enough — the world also needs to remove carbon that is already in the atmosphere. Existing solutions such as reforestation and soil carbon sequestration are important, but they are unlikely to scale to the size of the problem on their own. New carbon removal technologies must be developed and scaled.
These early technologies face a chicken-and-egg problem: they are expensive because few customers buy them, and few customers buy them because they are expensive. Early purchasers — like us — help new carbon removal technologies come down the cost curve and up the volume curve, just as early adoption did for solar panels and DNA sequencing.
